Barbecue Area Building Tips

A well-designed and organized grill area can be the perfect place for a family get-together or a gathering with friends. This is a great addition to the design of the infield. Homeowners have plenty of options for decorating it, but the first step is to choose a location, develop a project, and decide on materials before proceeding with the ideas.
| Barbecue Area Building Tips
How to choose the right place?
When arranging a barbecue area, the following factors should be considered:
  1. Air currents. Ashes should not fall into the yard of neighbors or into housing. If the gusts of wind on the site often change direction, then it is necessary to install some kind of fence or protective canopy. Experts recommend building a wall 1.5–3.5 m high
  2. Convenient approach. The brazier must have free access from at least two sides. In this case, it will be possible to cook together, and in the event of an accidental fire, it will be easier to put out the fire from several directions. Paths should not be slippery.
  3. Proximity to a water source. It is desirable that the water supply is not far from the barbecue and recreation area, since the dishes will have to be washed often, and it is not very convenient to carry water. In the event of a fire, close proximity to a water source will also be necessary.
  4. Location from home. A barbecue area should not be set up too far from the house, as food will often have to be taken out of it to the brazier. At the same time, a close location is also undesirable so that smoke does not enter the living quarters.
  5. Comfort. As a rule, a brazier is installed in a recreation area, so you need to take care of additional amenities - furniture, street lighting, etc. Too close location is unacceptable. You can arrange a comfortable straight path from the recreation area to the brazier.
  6. Aesthetics. It is better to have a brazier and a recreation area in a place with beautiful views of the garden plot. It is good if there are flower arrangements or flower beds of ornamental plants, a pond or a fountain nearby.
  7. Plot surface. The place under the barbecue must be level so that accidental tipping does not occur. All irregularities must be corrected.
The choice of a suitable place for the barbecue area should be carried out taking into account the safety of the barbecue equipment. First of all, there should not be any quickly flammable objects nearby (firewood, hay, etc.). They must be at least 2 meters away from the fire. You should not build such a zone close to the fence, trees, buildings, gazebos. According to existing standards, residential buildings should be located 5 m from a source of open fire. On the mangal site, all dry grass should be destroyed. It is recommended to have a fire extinguisher.
Of course, the creation of a brazier zone must be carried out taking into account existing facilities and plants. It is important to consider that the presence of outbuildings for animals next to the barbecue area is also not recommended.
Design and drawings
Open type. Represents an area in an open meadow or garden plot. The brazier is established directly on the earth or on a suitable support. A table and seats are set next to it. This option is the simplest and most economical. When creating such a zone, fire safety rules should be followed. This configuration has the advantage of being compact, but it will be affected by the weather. For example, rain can interfere with barbecue cooking.
Closed type. Provides a canopy for barbecue, table and benches. In this case, a wind fence (wall) is arranged on the back side. The canopy is usually mounted on metal or wooden supports. When installing the barbecue, a chimney can be provided. Zone parameters are determined depending on the number of people. At a minimum, the width should be 4.4-4.5 m. This is quite enough for 8-10 barbecue lovers. Now it is also fashionable to equip a patio with a barbecue and a table for eating. Such a recreation area is often adjacent to a house or buildings. The walls are a good protection against gusts of wind, but in this case, the brazier must be equipped with a chimney and a roof.
Generic type. It is a mobile structure that can be assembled and disassembled, installed on any suitable site. In this case, light protection against wind and rain is used in the form of an awning made of fabric or film. For this purpose, you can also use a regular beach umbrella.
Suitable ready-made projects can be found on sites dedicated to construction, or ordered from architectural bureaus. The design of the braziers may vary. Refractory brick models require a foundation. There is also a wide variety of metal braziers on the market. They are installed on the ground, lawn or tiles laid on the site. These braziers can have different sizes. Compact options are suitable for small areas.
First of all, it is worth deciding on the choice of the barbecue and the zone, taking into account the number of participants in the future barbecue, and then calculating the size of the site. It is recommended to transfer your ideas to paper. Even if you do not have professional skills in this matter, a sketch will make it easier to navigate the sequence of work and determine the required amount of materials.
Arranging the place
Then a brick or stone brazier is laid out according to the selected project, or a purchased metal brazier is concreted into the foundation. The platform itself is laid out with a flooring of paving slabs, stone or wood. To do this, remove a layer of earth (30 cm), level and compact the soil, and then cover it with a layer of sand and gravel (5–10 cm each). Crushed stone is covered with sand from above and laid on top of the slab on a cement mortar. Often, concrete is poured over the crushed stone layer, having previously installed the formwork, and flooring materials are placed on it.
When arranging a brazier or a brick oven, you need to take care of the foundation.
The manufacturing process itself includes several steps:
  • 12–14 cm are added to the barbecue parameters (width and length) and appropriate markings are made in the selected area.
  • They dig a recess of 0.65–0.7 m. If the foundation is made of a slab, then a hole is made over the entire area, and when arranging the tape version, they dig a trench around the perimeter. Experts recommend choosing a solid foundation from a slab, as it can better withstand temperature changes.
  • The bottom of the pit is rammed.
  • Crushed stone 10–12 cm high is poured and compacted manually or with a power tool.
  • Formwork is prepared from concrete with a height of 10 cm for a slab and 25–30 cm for a strip foundation. Usually, cement of the M200 brand, etc. is taken for this purpose. It is advisable to lay reinforcement under the slab in the form of a grid, and for the tape version, rods.
  • The concrete is allowed to harden for 9–14 days, and then two waterproofing layers of roofing felt or roofing material are installed, smearing each of them.
Subsequent arrangement involves following some rules:

  1. Provide a canopy. To prevent rainy weather from becoming an obstacle to cooking, it is necessary to install a canopy over the barbecue and a table with seats. You can make a gazebo. In this case, it is made of concrete, brick, metal parts. If the gazebo is wooden, then it is necessary to ensure that the tree is impregnated with a special coating. A hole should be made in the floor in front of the hearth from a metal sheet so that accidentally falling coals do not cause a fire.
  2. Build a wall or fence. Such a structure can be made of decorative stone and installed on the north side. Part of the area adjacent to the neighboring yard can be separated by planting vines that form a dense green barrier. If the barbecue area is used not only in the warm season, but also in winter, then it can be protected with 1-2 main walls, while others can be made lighter, sliding or use removable panels.
  3. Consider a chimney. In a stationary furnace, the pipe is led out through the roof, and for a portable fire source, a hole in the canopy with parameters of 35 × 35 cm is enough. To protect the chimney from precipitation, a special cap is installed on top.
  4. Pick up a table and seating. In indoor options, you can use massive dining furniture or make comfortable sofas. In an open area, it is better to use light portable furniture that is resistant to various weather conditions.
  5. Take care of inventory storage. If you often like to cook outdoors, then it is better to equip such an area with a desktop or cabinet, shelves for storing dishes and other kitchen utensils.
  6. Conduct electricity and make lighting. It is also necessary for connecting electrical appliances - a kettle, stove, mixer, etc.
  7. Set up a hand basin. It is hung on a wall or other suitable support. The water flowing from the washstand is drained by a pipe into a barrel or a large basin without a bottom. You can plant crops nearby that prefer moist soil.
The following materials are most popular for the barbecue area:

Stone. Real or artificial. It looks the most decorative and is a fireproof option. It is used for finishing the furnace and for covering the site.
Brick. This heat-resistant material comes in various qualities and colors. Beautiful masonry will give the barbecue area a more solid look.
Metal. Forged products are not cheap, but they look vintage. From metal, you can make a brazier and work surfaces, furniture and decor elements.
Wood can be used for finishing and flooring, but non-flammable materials should be used directly near the brazier itself. Terrace board does not last as long as paving slabs, stone or clinker bricks used for arranging a barbecue area, but it gives the area a more cozy look. Wooden elements should be treated with protective equipment. Under hard coatings, a base is made depending on the selected material. The terrace board is placed on the logs, and the garden parquet is placed on a concrete or gravel base. Sand, cement and crushed stone are needed for the foundation for a stone barbecue and flooring.
With a stationary canopy, roof racks are made of wood, metal or brick. The canopy itself is made of wooden rafters, and the coating can be different - from tiles, roofing felt, slate, metal sheets. Many summer residents, when arranging a barbecue area, use tree cuts or make mosaics from broken dishes.
Arranging the place
Even at the stage of drawing up projects and drawings, it is necessary to outline certain sections on the general plan of the barbecue area that perform different functions. If desired, they can be separated by living or wicker fences, a wooden, bamboo or wrought iron partition, a bar counter
This place is usually divided into the following zones:
  1. For cooking. There will be a brazier and accessories for it. It is located most often along the edge of the site. Usually there are also work surfaces for cutting and cooking.
  2. For eating. There is a dining table and seating.
When placing them, you must follow certain rules:

  • the place of eating should be further than 2 m from the barbecue and not block the approaches to it;
  • over both zones, it is best to make awnings or place them in a gazebo so as not to depend on the vagaries of the weather;
  • if a table with chairs is placed near the wall, then the issue of fixing the canopy and the shadow will be resolved.

When the barbecue area is only part of a large recreation area, then the zoning of the territory should be approached more globally and determine where other areas will be located - a pool and sun loungers, a bathhouse, a playground, and so on.The place of eating can be located on the terrace of the house, in the summer kitchen, gazebo. The main thing is that it should not be far from the barbecue, but not closer than the recommended minimum distances.
Arranging the place
Garden furniture on the barbecue area must be resistant to the external environment and weather. Collapsible or lightweight products are most preferable, which can be transferred to storage at the end of the season.

For summer residents, the following materials for furniture are most popular:

  1. Plastic. Lightweight and affordable tables and chairs in a variety of sizes, colors and models. There is a stylization of wood or marble. During operation, it becomes covered with scratches, and under the direct rays of the sun it quickly loses its appearance.
  2. Metal. Wrought iron furniture looks very original and decorative, but is not cheap. It looks great next to the iron grill. Such furniture is somewhat heavy and requires a hard surface of the site. It is durable, but it is better not to put it in the sun, as the metal heats up very much from this. Pillows in bright colors go well with it.
  3. Rattan. Outdoors, artificial rattan is recommended. Such furniture looks very presentable in the country. Plus, it's lightweight and durable.
  4. Tree . Looks great and fits well with a variety of design styles, but requires careful maintenance.
In the indoor version, you can arrange upholstered furniture. It is good to use frameless modular options. A barbecue area combined with a seating area can be well complemented by toppers and futons. They are not very comfortable for eating, but they are comfortable to rest in. Resourceful summer residents make furniture from pallets, tires, industrial coils and even plastic bottles. Often, wooden logs and stumps are adapted for furniture.
It's a good idea to set different light sources for individual zones:

  • near the hearth;
  • above the table;
  • for highlighting decorative elements (flower beds, statues, fountains);
  • around the recreation area.

To stay on the barbecue area in the dark, lighting is necessary. If electricity is not supplied here, then solar-powered lamps or battery-powered lamps can be used. To do this, you can use LED lights and ribbons, garlands, light bulbs and lamps of various shapes and light intensities.
Decor application
When decorating and finishing a place of rest with a barbecue, the general style of the site should be taken into account. Under it, you should choose furniture, buildings, decorative figures, plants. If there is a Japanese or Chinese garden around, then natural materials, stones and gravel should be used. You can plant conifers (thuya, juniper) or flowering shrubs (hydrangeas, rhododendrons) next to the site, make a small pond with a bridge or a fountain in a natural style.
The main thing is not to plant anything near the fire. It would also be a good idea to put a gazebo in the form of a tea house and arrange containers with miniature trees.
In a Scandinavian or rustic style, beds and pots of herbs, simple flowers such as marigolds or nasturtiums will look good. A wicker fence, earthenware and funny garden figurines, a well, and simple wooden furniture would also be appropriate.

For a regular style, the resting place can be decorated with symmetrically arranged flowerpots with roses and classical statues. Pergola with vines, evergreens, amphorae, stone or mosaic flooring and rattan furniture with cushions will look great in the decoration of the Mediterranean patio. Nearby you can place a pond or pool. With eco-style, you can use stumps and picturesque snags, wickerwork from a vine and plant wild plants.
Forged products - furniture, lanterns, pergolas, fences and partitions, utensils - can become a decoration for the mangal zone. A beautifully forged brazier can itself become the main decoration. The laying of a brazier made of natural stone or its imitation, decorative brick will look no less impressive. The latter can still be decorated with tiled slabs or stucco. They can be plastered and decorated as a fabulous Russian stove.

Not the last role in decor and creating comfort is played by textiles - tablecloths, pillows, towels, blankets, curtains. The arrangement of the barbecue area gives a lot of room for imagination. According to your desire and taste, you can decorate the brazier surrounding the territory, pick up furniture and decor. Having realized all the fantasies, such a platform has every chance of becoming the most comfortable and favorite place on a suburban area.
